Day 1
Arrival at Domus in the town of Assisi.
After meeting with your guide, we will start our tour that includes not only the places and the history of St. Francis of Assisi, but also a beautiful walk in the suggestive historical centres of Umbria. Our first stop will be the Cathedral of San Rufino, one of the greatest masterpieces of Umbrian Romanesque architecture. We will enter the Basilica of Santa Chiara with its relics inside and the Crucifix of San Damiano that spoke to Saint Francis. Arriving in Piazza del Comune, we look up at the Temple of Minerva, which later became a Christian church, the Torre del Popolo and the Palazzo dei Priori.
We will then visit the Basilica dedicated to Saint Francis, patron saint of Italy, where his remains are preserved. After a moment of recollection, return by coach to the Domus.
Dinner and overnight stay.
Day 2
After breakfast and meeting with the guide, transfer by coach to Norcia. Norcia is in the heart of the Monti Sibillini National Park: the city is surrounded by mountains that reach a height of over 2000 metres. In the mountains, in large flat amphitheatres, valuable crops are produced (the famous lentils of the Castelluccio plain) which we will visit immediately afterwards. Here, we will immerse ourselves in the colours of Italy’s most beautiful flowering season. We will take a walk through the colourful meadows while admiring nature. After countless photos and a nice board of salami from the norcineria, we will continue on to Rasiglia, a small village on the way back to Assisi. The village, which retains the typical characteristics of a medieval village, is gathered in an amphitheatre-like structure, and is famous above all for its springs: strolling through the alleys of the centre you will come across the streams that cross the town, making it very special and fascinating. Return by coach to Domus. Dinner and overnight stay.
Day 3
After breakfast, transfer by coach to Gubbio, the most beautiful medieval town in Italy.
We start our visit from the hill overlooking the town with the Basilica of St. Ubaldo (the town’s venerated patron saint) and walk along the road of the candles, a sacred path for the Gubbio people, with magnificent views of rooftops, squares and bell towers. We have lunch in the town centre and then visit the Cathedral of Saints Marian and James, which houses the relics of the two martyrs. A stop in Piazza Grande is a must, followed by alleyways, churches and breathtaking views. We finish our visit in the Church dedicated to St. Francis, probably the second Franciscan church built after the Basilica of Assisi.
Return by coach to the Domus. Dinner and overnight stay.
Day 4
After breakfast, we will conclude our tour by discovering places full of spirituality that frame the historic centre of Assisi. We will enter the Eremo delle Carceri, an ancient hermitage located at 800 metres above sea level, on the slopes of Mount Subasio. St Francis used it as a retreat for his first followers.
We will descend a few kilometres to visit the Sanctuary of San Damiano, where the Order of the Poor Clares was founded by St Clare and which was the first home of the Crucifix that spoke to St Francis. We will make a brief stop at the Sanctuary of Rivotorto. The structure was built on the replica of the Sacred Hovel, the first place of meditation and prayer of Francis and his faithful.
We will finish with a visit to the Porziuncola, set in the immense Basilica of Santa Maria degli Angeli. Here Francis founded the Order of Friars Minor in 1209.END OF SERVICES
