Lake Maggiore – Land of enchantment and nature
4 days / 3 nights
Arrival at the hotel in Baveno, settling into the rooms and meeting with the guide.
Transfer by coach to Verbania.
Our tour on the shores of the wonderful Lake Maggiore, cradle of the Borromean Islands, begins with a visit to the splendid Villa Taranto in Verbania and its botanical gardens, wanted by a Scottish Captain to reproduce his homeland. Inside the gardens, plants unique in Europe are kept and safeguarded.
Return by coach to the hotel.
Dinner and overnight stay.
After breakfast and a meeting with the guide, we will set sail on our boat to Isola Madre, the largest and oldest of the Borromean islands. It started out as a small island with a few houses, a small church dedicated to Saint Victor, a cemetery and some olive trees used to produce oil for use in liturgies. Over the centuries, it became the private meeting place of the Borromeo family.
The island has been owned by the family since the Middle Ages and also includes a beautiful botanical garden that provides a backdrop to the splendid view of the lake.
Lunch at a restaurant on the island.
After lunch, we will set off on our boat to Isola Bella. It took almost four hundred years and the work of hundreds of architects, engineers, plasterers, painters and cabinetmakers to bring about the extraordinary transformation of Isola Bella from a rock to a place of delight. Famous is the Berthier Gallery with its rooms and the Massimo Theatre.
Return by boat to the hotel.
Dinner and overnight stay.
After breakfast and meeting with the guide, we will go by coach to Santa Caterina del Sasso, stopping first to admire, along the way, the Colossus of San Carlo Borromeo. The statue was built in Arona, Borromeo’s birthplace, after his canonisation and in honour of the greatness of the Milanese archbishop. At 35 metres high, it was the tallest statue in the world for almost two centuries.
We continue our journey and arrive at the Hermitage of Santa Caterina del Sasso. Carved out of the rock overlooking Lake Maggiore, it remains one of the most evocative and spiritual places in Italy. Legend has it that it was founded by a merchant who survived a shipwreck through the intercession of Saint Catherine of Alexandria in the 12th century.
Transfer by coach to Angera and lunch at the Agriturismo.
After lunch, we visit the Rocca Borromeo in Angera. This fortress, which belonged to the Visconti family before passing to the Borromeos, stands on a spur of limestone rock from which there is a breathtaking view of Lake Maggiore. The interior houses important frescoes such as those visible in the Hall of Justice.
Return by coach to the hotel.
Dinner and overnight stay.
After breakfast and meeting with the guide, our tour ends in Stresa and specifically at the Pallavicino Park. The park with its Villa was created as a private residence in 1855. Only 100 years later, it was decided to transform this wonderful garden into a wildlife museum open to the public. More than 50 species of mammals and birds are housed here, and over time some specimens rescued by the forest rangers have also found a home in the park.
At the end of the visit of the Park, we will have time for a walk in the centre of Stresa for a pleasant break, before going back to the Hotel by coach.
