Venice – The faith of the lagoon
4 days / 3 nights
Arrival of the participants at our Domus, this holiday home is located inside two splendid adjoining historic buildings, one of which is “Palazzo Rizzi”, which gives its name to the “Fondamenta” of the same name, and therefore benefits from the prestigious atmosphere and exclusive charm of a typical Venetian period residence that at the same time exudes a mystical and spiritual aura.
We will start our tour with an itinerary that will take us to the marvellous Basilica of Santa Maria della Salute. We will pass through extravagant and unknown places that only Venice can offer.
Passing through Campo Santa Margherita, we will climb up the Ponte dei Pugni (Bridge of Fists), so called because, according to an ancient tradition, the inhabitants of two Venetian sestrieri used to meet on the bridge at Christmas time to literally “punch each other”. We will see the Squero di San Trovaso, one of the oldest Venetian gondola construction sites and pass by the Churches of Santi Gervasio e Protasio, dei Gesuati and the Ex Church of San Gregorio, now a restoration workshop. We will then visit the Basilica della Salute, built in the Bacino di San Marco, is one of the best expressions of Venetian Baroque architecture. Its construction represents an ex-voto to the Madonna by the Venetians for the liberation from the plague that decimated the population between 1630 and 1631.
Dinner in a restaurant. Overnight stay in Domus.
We will visit the most important Basilica in Venice, the one dedicated to Saint Mark.
But before arriving there, we will touch some points of the city of enormous interest such as the House of Goldoni, the famous Venetian playwright. We will cross the Rialto Market, a large covered market on the canal with kiosks selling fish, seafood and vegetables, and the Rialto Bridge, the oldest and most famous bridge in Venice. Arriving in the majestic St. Mark’s Square, we will visit the Basilica, the city’s greatest monument, a temple of civil life as well as religious faith, and a testimony to the greatness of Venice. For about a thousand years, it served as the Ducal Chapel, directly dependent on the Doge, who appointed the Primicerio, who was given episcopal authority, and as the State Church, entrusted to the protection of the Procurators of St. Mark’s. The most refined and precious jewel is considered by all to be the Pala d’Oro, placed on the high altar of St. Mark’s Basilica, which glorifies the Evangelist and contains his relics.
Lunch in a restaurant.
After lunch, we go to another very important place of worship for Venetians, the Church of San Zaccaria. A very old church dating back to the 9th century, built to house the remains of the father of St John the Baptist which had been donated by the Byzantine emperor Leo V the Armenian.
Dinner in a restaurant. Overnight stay in Domus.
Our visit today begins with the beautiful Church of the Carmini and the nearby Scuola Grande dei Carmini, a structure that housed the charitable confraternity of the Pinzòcchere, lay women who used the confraternity to help others. We will see the Church of San Pantalon covered with the largest frescoed canvas in the world and arrive at the Basilica Santa Maria Gloriosa dei Frari. It is the largest church in Venice dedicated to the Assumption of Mary. Inside there are many works by Titian, the tombs of Titian and Canova.
Lunch in a restaurant.
Not far from the Basilica, we visit the Scuola Grande di San Rocco, a lay confraternity founded in 1478 where Tintoretto painted his most famous cycle of paintings with episodes from the Old and New Testaments.
Dinner in a restaurant. Overnight stay in Domus.
We will finish our tour with a route that will take us to the Church of San Nicola da Tolentino, whose convent today is the seat of the University Institute of Architecture, and continue with a guided visit to the Scuola Grande di San Giovanni Evangelista, the oldest charitable school in Venice, which houses the relic of the Holy Cross. Fascinating is also the portal with the eagle, symbol of San Giovanni Evangelista.
