Lombardy tour – Fascination and wonder of a region
4 days / 3 nights
Arrival at the Hotel**** in the early afternoon and accommodation in the rooms. After meeting with our guide, we will start our Tour of Lombardy, entering the fabulous Reggia di Monza. Commissioned by the Hapsburgs, in neoclassical style, it was for a long time the private residence of the Napoleonic rulers first and then of the Savoy family.
At the end of the visit, we return to the hotel for dinner and overnight stay.
After breakfast, we set off for Morimondo Abbey. Founded in 1134 by French Cistercian monks, it still retains the beauty of its Gothic style, saved even after long periods of war and sacking between the cities of Pavia and Milan. We will visit the cloister, the church and the monastery, which will hold some surprises in store for us.
Lunch in a restaurant in Morimondo.
After lunch, together with our guide, we will visit one of the most beautiful monuments in Lombardy, the Certosa di Pavia. It is believed that the presumed reason for this construction, commissioned by Gian Galeazzo Visconti, Duke of Milan, is linked to the desire of his second wife and cousin, Caterina, daughter of Regina della Scala and Barnabò Visconti, to erect a symbol of faith and at the same time of the power of the Milanese dukedom. We will be fascinated by its cloisters, gardens and works of art that make up the monumental complex.
At the end of the visit, we return to the hotel for dinner and overnight stay.
After breakfast and meeting with the guide, transfer by coach to Varese. We will visit one of the oldest places of worship and spirituality in Italy, Sacro Monte. A destination for tourists and pilgrims for over 500 years, it became a UNESCO site in 2003.
The fourteen chapels along the way represent the Mysteries of the Rosary. The last of the Mysteries is represented in the Chapel inside the village of Santa Maria del Monte, which houses the effigy of the Black Madonna. We will also visit the Crypt with important frescoes from the 14th century.
Lunch in a restaurant on Sacro Monte.
After lunch, our visit continues with the wonderful Hermitage of Santa Caterina del Sasso. Carved out of the rock overhanging Lake Maggiore, it remains one of the most evocative and spiritually charged places on our peninsula. Legend has it that it was founded by a merchant who survived a shipwreck through the intercession of Saint Catherine of Alexandria in the 12th century.
At the end of the visit, we return to the hotel for dinner and overnight stay.

After breakfast, we will leave the hotel rooms and move on to Bergamo Alta, the medieval heart of the city, which contains the beauty and history of past eras. We will see the Piazza Vecchia, which is a place of tranquillity and ancient beauty at the centre of which is the Contarini Fountain, with its sphinxes.
We will pass in front of the Palazzo della Regione in Città Alta, the oldest municipal building in Italy. Continuing our walk, we will see the Campanone or Torre Civica, which overlooks Piazza Vecchia and for the Bergamasks is the Campanone or Campanù in dialect. 56 metres high, from which you can enjoy a fantastic view over the whole of Bergamo.
The Colleoni Chapel, a majestic architectural beauty, a masterpiece of the Lombard and Italian Renaissance. The chapel, adjacent to the Basilica of S. Maria Maggiore, houses the remains of the leader Bartolomeo Colleoni, captain general of the Venetian mainland militia.
The Basilica S. Maria Maggiore. Its history is linked to an unfortunate event: the famine and plague that was sweeping through northern Italy.
The people of Bergamo prayed to Mary and invoked her help; as a sign of thanks they dedicated a church to her. This is how the Basilica was built: in 1137 the first stone was laid. Inside is the tomb of the famous Gaetano Donizetti, of Giovanni Simone Mayr, a Bavarian musician and master of the local composer, and of Cardinal Guglielmo Longo degli Alessandrini.
